BEST HIKE WITH KIDS Nine stream crossings. Rock formations that look like gargoyles. Bighorn sheep. Need we say more? This trail follows Fourmile Creek for 10 miles, but you dont have to go all that way to see the sights. Take a lunch, pack the insect repellent, and dont forget sandals to wear on your stream crossings. Early in the spring, the water might be too high for the littlest hikers; plan a trip for summer and plan on getting wet. Off Colorado Highway 67, about six miles southwest of Divide. Managed by the Colorado Division of Wildlife; 227-5200.
A few moments ago Christine Weglinski, our Production Manager, walked into my office with a heaping dish of “Death By Chocolate,” her famous million-calories-per-serving dessert. The recipe requires one package of chocolate cake mix, two large packages of instant chocolate pudding, a large container of non-dairy whipped topping, six toffee candy bars (crushed) and a very large bowl. The appearance in our Teaching K-8 offices of such unexpected snacks is typical of the family-type happenings that go on around here as we create this magazine for you.
Muslim immigrant families living in the United States may well come to the attention of mental health professionals. This article examines the applicability of the Anglo-American models of family therapy to Muslim immigrant families. The most significant differences in value systems between the Muslim and Anglo-American cultures is Muslim families preference for greater connectedness, a less flexible and more hierarchical family structure, and an implicit communication style. There is an increasing interest among family scholars, researchers, and therapists in understanding cultural diversity, family systems, and the impact of religious ideology on family life (Falicov, 1988; Haj-Yahia, 1995; McGoldrick, 1993; Modares, 1981; Tseng Hsu, 1991). However, there remains a lack of information on Islamic ideology and its impact on the lives of Muslim immigrant families living in the United States. Islam is a monotheistic religion, civilization, and way of life practiced by 1.1 billion people (Bill, 1994). Shortly after the year 2000, for the first time in history, the number of Muslims will surpass the number of Christians in the world (Bill, 1994). Islam is the religion of the majority of citizens in the Near East, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and much of northern Africa. Large numbers of people in Indonesia, Malaysia, and China also live in accordance with Islamic traditions (Fellows, 1979; Ludwig, 1989).

Kava

July 22nd, 2008

A South Pacific odyssey to uncover the traditional uses of this mild-mannered medicinal. Kava, or Piper methysticum, is both a Pacific island plant and a beverage made from the pulverized roots of the plant. And while kava supplements are becoming popular in the U.S. for relieving stress and anxiety, kava — as a beverage — has been consumed by island cultures as a social beverage, and ceremonial libation, for an estimated 3,000 years. During my first trip to the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu, I drank kava on several occasions in a traditional village called Baie Martellie. There, only men drink kava. In other countries in the South Pacific, women also drink kava. In the remote islands of Vanuatu, however, men and women believe that the favor of the ancestors and the integrity of the community is maintained by enforcing certain cultural taboos, or rules, including behavioral divisions between men and women. Of a total village population of about 140 people, there were about 40 men. To serve their kava drinking needs, there were three kava drinking huts, or nakamals, busy each and every night.
DIETARY SUPPLEMENT The FDA is investigating whether the use of dietary supplements containing the herb kava (a product with sedative properties, also known as kava kava or Piper methysticum) poses health concerns. The reason is that products containing kava extracts have been implicated in at least 25 cases of serious liver toxicity, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure, in Europe. When you receive an order or prepare to administer a drug, pay attention to whether the order specifies an extended-release or regular formulation. Check too that the frequency of the prescribed dosing is appropriate for the form prescribed.
For some, the name alone evokes relaxation. Kava kava, plant of the Pacific Islands, plant of far away — from romantic destinations like Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Plant whose tropical origins summon images of palm trees, pretty beaches, gentle waves, and soft breezes; a perfect picture of repose. Kava, an herb which, for thousands of years, has helped people relax, venerate, and explore connections with their past, and solve current-day problems. Why all the interest in kava? What does it offer to North Americans living in decidedly un-tropical regions? Lets look at its history, then explore its use for us, today.

ASHBURN, Ga. — For the first time, the faces of students at the Turner County High School prom were both white and black. Each year, in spite of integration, the schools white students had raised money for their own unofficial prom and black students did the same to throw their own separate party, an annual ritual that divided the southern Georgia peanut-farming county anew each spring. That all changed Saturday as horse-drawn carriages and stretch limousines carried young couples around the downtown streets to a single prom.

The Lying Game James W. Loewen, a guy obsessed with the dissemination of misinformation (”Lies My Teacher Told Me”) is back with “Lies Across America: What Our Historic Sites Get Wrong” (Touchstone, $15). Its not precisely a travel guide, but its a good guide for travelers who visit historic sites. Did you know the Traditional Lincoln Birthplace Cabin in Kentucky is a composite of several old cabins, none of which are where the late great president was born? Some examples he gives are lies by omission, others an attempt to be politically correct - but inaccuracies are rife, nonetheless.

Real Estate Brokers with the SRES designation help seniors make wise decisions about selling their home, buying rental property, managing the capital gains and estate tax implications of owning real estate, obtaining a reverse mortgage, moving to a senior community and other issues. The designation was introduced in 1997 and is nationally recognized.
Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Daimler-Benz yesterday decided not to let its German rivals leave it in the dust in super-luxury cars, approving plans to go ahead with production of a limousine to compete with Rolls-Royce. As Volkswagen and BMW reached a settlement on taking over Rolls brands, Daimlers management board gave the go-ahead for production of the Maybach, which it has previewed at auto shows for the past year. “With the positive decision for the production of the Mercedes- Benz Maybach, we are underscoring once more our claim to represent the absolute top in every market segment,” said Daimler chief executive Mr Jurgen Schrempp.
PLEASANTON — From the moment Bill Wheeler told his friends and family that he was serious about getting into the limousine business, few took him for his word. Wheeler was the last person they could picture going into a business that revolved around punctuality. “I had never been on time anywhere in my life,” Wheeler said. “What people didnt understand is that if I were paid to be on time, then thats an entirely different matter.”

The TriActive Fitness Zone is an attractive cluster of outdoor exercise equipment, which provides an enjoyable way to improve physical fitness for individuals, families and the community. The TriActive fitness concept suggests that people who wouldnt work out in a gym will feel more comfortable and have more fun using equipment outdoors in a park setting. The TriActive equipment is equally effective as a cluster of exercise stations in a neighborhood park, at schools, colleges or training areas, or interspersed along a fitness trail. Growth of the home fitness market is expected to remain slow compared to the commercial fitness market, particularly due to differences in the demographics of home exercisers and health club members. Home consumers are usually older and have lower household incomes. Health club growth is believed to remain strong with introduction of new, attractive fitness packages. However, smaller club owners feel threatened by the increasing dominance of super-center fitness chains. The competitive scenario in the non-US fitness market is quite fragmented compared to the US market. However, growth potential in the non-US market is strong with consumers in the emerging markets paying greater attention to fitness.

As your new president, I face a challenging task when it comes to speaking to you about school finance. Let me give you my dilemma. It is the end of the school year as I write this piece and I am reflecting on the uncertain state of school finances in coming months and what these financial challenges mean for us as school system leaders. You will share my frustration that as many as half the nations students may be directly shortchanged of the education they deserve, with the remainder not immune to the impact of belt tightening. As bad as that news is, last year at this time NCSL found 36 states with budget gaps. On the other hand, NCLB and IDEA could be funded retroactively, which would help make up for last years budget shortfalls that resulted from unfunded or underfunded mandates. If you are a school leader in one of the rare districts whose state legislature decided this summer to support quality education with adequate funding for all your schools, the future must look bright, so you can skip the remainder of this column. If youre not in that sunny camp, please continue and let me share my thoughts.
Where Creativity and Capital Meet Using Untapped Collateral and Nontraditional Payment Terms Three significant requirements are needed for a client to utilize monetization financing: 1) an assignment of/or an absolute and unconditional promise to pay from an investment-grade obligor or an acceptable substitute financial instrument backing the transaction, 2) a predictable cash flow, and 3) a date-certain payment. An investment-grade obligor for this program is typically rated by SP and Moodys with an acceptable rating. There are exceptions and substitutes, however, for these rating criteria. If a company is not rated, there are alternate procedures to qualify said obligor. An obligor is typically a customer or other third party who has contractually agreed to make payments to the client or guarantee payments for the client within a term of 1-30 years. In one sense, monetization financing can be viewed as a longer-term variation of factoring without the high cost and other major differences associated with factoring.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. An arched window situated just above the garden tub in this master bath left the space bathed in light but devoid of privacy. The homeowners-Elaine and Bob Jackson of Alpharetta, Georgia-wanted the sense of seclusion without losing the natural light and airy ambience provided by the window. A pair of custom-built louvered shutters proved perfect for the window. The Georgian Company, a local shutter shop, measured and designed the shutters for the Jacksons bath. “The critical part of interior shutters is the measuring and knowing how youre going to hang them,” says the shops owner, Bob Gard. “If theyre measured right, they fit like a glove,” he explains. The shutters mount inside the window frame. An outside mount is preferable if you want your windows to appear bigger or if you want to hide an unattractive one, while an inside mount gives a more finished appearance.

M2 BEST BOOKS-(C)2000-2003 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD Martin Kemp has collected together the thoughts of over fifty renowned art historians from across the world in The Oxford History of Western Art. For example, in the section entitled Romantic Quandaries, Turners Snow Storm: Hannibal and His Army Crossing the Alps shares a page with Gericaults The Raft of the Medusa as contributor John Goodman examines the political context of these striking classics - the devastating cost of Napoleons campaign and the ramifications of the Medusa disaster - whilst noting both the sparse formal definition in Turners piece, and Gericaults recourse to a somewhat traditional pyramidal composition.
SPRINGVILLE — American film and television have done much to color our perception of the Native American — and much of that perception has been negative. However, through Oct. 24, visitors to the Springville Museum of Art may experience the simple majesty of the people and vistas of the Southwest through the eyes of 26 early Western artists. Composed of three collections — Diane and Sam Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Clark and the Springville Museum of Art — the exhibit is a balanced mixture of styles and techniques. Of the artists in their collection, Diane Stewart said: “I think they epitomize the American West. In fact the paintings of Couse, Sharp, Burninghaus, Ufer and other great masters represent the very soul of the West.”

This week Im going to have my hair cut. Im dreading it. Not because of the cost. Or because, as usual, Ill end up looking like Diana Ross. But because the hairdresser will talk to me. Hairdressers are the most boring people in the world, capable of discoursing at length upon an infinite range of mind-numbingly dull subjects. Pets, politics, holidays, kitchen appliances - you name it, hairdressers have an enormous amount to say about it. And theyll do so whether you want to hear it or not. It starts as soon as you enter the salon. They clock you in the mirror, and begin analysing you. Phrases such as “Lovely weather!” might seem innocuous, but are actually a test. A response marks you out as easy prey. Silence indicates youll need some softening up. Once in the chair, the chatter starts in earnest. A favourite opening gambit is “Good heavens, sir, who cut your hair last time?” Youre forced to confess that you did, then youre subjected to a lecture on how haircutting is best left to the professionals. What you dont say is that you only cut your own hair because the professionals are so boring.

Oral Chelation

July 14th, 2008

Chelating therapies are not new, and acceptance varies from country to country. In my humble opinion, there are reasons for this discrepancy in acceptance: 1. If you speak Latin to the Chinese, expect miscommunication. 2. To receive medical acceptance, you must prove the therapys effectiveness.
> On July 11,2000, the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners passed a position paper limiting the use and promotion of Chelation therapy. They found the therapy is in violation of Tennessee Code Annotated 63-6-314 which states it is illegal to advertise prevention or cure or any illness or to perform Chelation therapy unless it is in an approved clinical trial in an academic institution or used for heavy metal poisoning in accordance with FDA approved uses.
Chelators added to pectinase-rich enzyme mixtures increase the efficiency of enzyme retting of flax. The multitude of available chelators requires research to optimize enzyme retting for cost and fiber quality. Of several chelators tested, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is the most effective in sequestering calcium from solution, with substantial activity even at pH 4 or 5. Phosphate is also effective, but only at high pH. EDTA and Mayoquest 200, a commercial product with -37% EDTA, in combination with Viscozyme L or Lyvelin, commercial enzymes with polygalacturonase activities, yield high Fried test scores, indicating efficient separation of fibers from core tissues. Neither chelator nor enzyme at the levels tested alone effectively rets flax at a pH of around 5. In contrast, EDTA at 20 mmol/L levels and alkaline pH yields high Fried test scores. The addition of BioPrep, a commercial pectate lyase, does not influence retting measured by the Fried test with EDTA at alkaline pH, but the enzyme does improve retting with the weaker chelator sodium tripolyphosphate. The quality of fibers, as determined by the yield of fine fibers obtained by passing retted flax through the Shirley analyzer, is substantially greater with EDTA plus Viscozyme at pH 5 than alkaline chemical retting with EDTA, sodium tripolyphosphate, or sodium oxalate without enzyme. EDTA is the most effective chelator at acidic pH levels for stimulating flax retting by various commercial pectinase-rich enzyme mixtures. However, other less expensive candidates require additional study for more cost-effective formulations and applicable fiber properties. Retting is the process by which fibers in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) stems and other bast plants are separated from the nonfiber tissues. This process, which is usually microbial, is the major limitation in producing linen fibers [25]. For commercial flax fiber operations, flax stems are pulled from the ground and dew retted, in which indigenous fungi colonize and degrade the nonfiher tissues to liberate fibers. After dew retting, the stems are mechanically cleaned to remove shive and other contaminants from fibers for use in linen yarns and fabrics. While currently the method of choice, dew retting is restricted to geographical regions with appropriate climates, and the resulting fibers are often inconsistent in quality with significant amounts of dirt and contaminants [21, 25]. Therefore, considerable research has focused on alternative chemical and enzymatic methods to improve the consistency of fiber quality [1, 4, 5, 9, 10, 14, 21, 22, 25]. Increasing U.S. interest in flax fibers for use as cottonized fibers in textiles [4] and for bio-composites [19] globally provides a strong impetus to improve flax retting. The importance of pectin as a binder between cells and the necessity to remove it during retting has been acknowledged for several decades [25]. Therefore, pectinases, and in particular endopolygalacturonases, are effective in retting flax [2, 4, 11, 12, 17, 25, 26]. However, pectin is a complicated polysaccharide that varies in structure [16]. In nonmethylated pectins, often Ca2+ binds carboxyl groups of adjacent molecules, thus stabilizing pectins and thereby plant structure [20]. In flax, recent research has indicated that acidic pectins and Ca2+ are located preferentially in the epidermal regions of flax [18], likely contributing to the structural integrity of the stem and bast fibers. Therefore, complex formers, e.g., chelators, such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to remove Ca2+ have proven useful in retting flax and in facilitating enzyme retting [4, 7, 9, 11, 21].

Junk shop chic is the creed, and After Noah the name that husband and wife team Matthew Crawford and Zoe Candlin chose for their shop - they liked its suggestion that they would sell absolutely anything post- diluvian. Upper Street, Islington - the Kings Road of north London - was where they decided to found their business. Success came swiftly, and earlier this year they opened a second shop on the real Kings Road in Chelsea. Down a steep staircase you can find anything from a Twenties coat button to a kitsch decorated rubber washing-up glove as used today. After Noah brings a whole new meaning to eclecticism. But, of course, it would not have been enough simply to house a lot of junk, no matter how desirable. After Noahs popularity is the result of a meeting of two canny business minds, both with strong artistic bents and very different talents. “When we opened After Noah we wanted to combine our talents,” explains Matthew. “We both have a strong idea of our individual styles and managed to merge them well.” Matthews background as a cabinet maker and furniture restorer ensures that whatever comes in for sale can be lovingly restored and beeswaxed back to health. His apprenticeship to his grandfather more than a decade ago means that he now boasts a workshop of 12 years standing, trusted by the likes of English Heritage, Kew Gardens and even one or two embassies. Zoe is an artist and mosaicist with an unerring eye for consumer delights and a nice line in mosaic table-tops, which are now one of the shops most popular lines. The balance of old and new pieces is about 60-40, but youd never know it. A handmade steel bed may resemble the one your granny owned, but its available from the workshop, starting at pounds 595. Conical chocolate cups at about pounds 4 apiece look as if they are the last batch of a Thirties consignment. But dont worry - there will be a huge delivery of more next week. If there is one thing After Noah has achieved it is this balance of old incidentals and the ultra new, such as Tumbler cups -vessels with a rocking bottom -and the vinyl vase - a strip of plastic sleevelets which you fill with water for single stems and attach to your window. A price range stretching from pocket money to Fort Knox ensures that After Noah is relied on heavily by gift hunters: bored with the mass of glossy shops all offering similar goods found in every city centre, they troop in here knowing that they are always likely to find something a little different. The philosophy of After Noah is simple: keep it basic, keep it functional. There is almost a puritanical streak running through the choice of merchandise in the shop, made doubtful only by the chaos: you may bang your knee on a stool and collide with a spray of dried flowers, both at the same moment. After Noah is like an attic. Its your attic, my attic - different contents, but the same mania. So perhaps there is a little bit of all of us that responds to what one of Matthews assistants calls “disorganised comfort”. “People dont live in museums,” pronounces Matthew. “They acquire things over a period of time. Some are good quality, some are not, but overall there is a look, a cohesiveness.” Is it perhaps a look which is simply a home from home, or do they, Jekyll- and-Hyde-style, live in high Napoleonic splendour? “I think the shop is probably nicer to live in,” Matthew confesses with a little laugh. Recently an advertising campaign has raised the profile of After Noah, which has prompted the couple to open a second outlet on the Kings Road in Chelsea - some would say, the Upper Street of the South. After Noah, 121 Upper Street, N1 (tel: 0171-359 4281) and 261 Kings Road, SW3 (tel: 0171-351 2610)

diamond dealer

July 14th, 2008

In Bloody Nonsense (Nov. 20), Jack Jolis writes of the non-issue of blood diamonds. He asserts, If there were not a single diamond produced on the African continent, there would not be one fewer war there, nor one fewer human victim thereof. And what do these millions of dollars buy? Not just machetes and AK-47s, as Jolis claims, but, according to a January 2001 U.N. Report, items such as tanks, missiles, artillery, and landmines. The majority of Angolans maimed during the civil war (around 80,000 people) were injured by landmines. People continue to be killed and maimed today. A2004 BBC report estimated that there were somewhere between 500,000 and 1 million landmines in Angola–three years after the civil war ended. Jolis is correct on one point–profits from conflict diamonds do not supply the locally grown ganga with which the troops are mostly paid. Rather, those millions of dollars fund high-ranking rebel officials who often live outside their native countries in places such as Belgium and the United States.
During World War II, President Roosevelt needed natural diamonds for the manufacture of airplanes for the war, but the United States supply was depleted. Diamonds are used as abrasives and cutting tools in the manufacture of products such as automobiles and planes. The largest diamond miner in the world, De Beers of South Africa, was supplying Hitler and refused to sell diamonds to the United States. To counter this dependence on an outside supplier, Roosevelt commissioned General Electric to develop a technique to manufacture diamonds, and GE Superabrasives was born. “GEs strategy was to only own $1 billion platforms,” says Diamond Innovations CEO Tanya Fratto of the reason behind the sale.
should have stated that diamonds financed Unitas 20-year war with the MPLA (the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola). We used the word DiamondWorks instead of diamonds due to a production error. This was incorrect.

ANSWER: Clinical staff members qualified in ACLS should remain in the facility until all patients have left the premises. Accrediting agency and professional association standards all either require or recommend the presence of ACLS-trained professional personnel in ambulatory and office-based surgery settings until all patients are discharged from the facility. Accreditation and professional standards vary slightly among organizations but are consistent regarding the presence of professional personnel to provide postoperative patient care. * Accrediting bodies, such as the Centers for Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS), require the presence of ACLS-trained personnel in the ambulatory surgery facility until all patients have left the building. By Amy Jones The bamboo print is a clever modern take on the traditional floral beach shirt, by the wily English tailors Holland and Holland. “While we have traditionally focused on printed products such as business
cards and postcards, offering a new type of product is exciting for us
because it provides even more flexibility and value to our small business
and consumer customers,” said Janet Holian, chief marketing officer at
VistaPrint. “With VistaPrint, customers can order a customized T-Shirt in a
quantity as low as one and can buy additional T-Shirts in increments of
one. Typically a customer would be required to order dozens of customized
T-Shirts at a time that typically cost over $20 per shirt. VistaPrints
mission has always been to help small businesses market their business.
Spending over $500 ordering two dozen T-Shirts, isnt an option for so many
small businesses. With our new manufacturing capabilities, we now make it
affordable for our small business customers to buy just one customized
full-color T-Shirt for under $10.”

VistaPrints T-Shirts are perfect for small businesses such as
landscaping and painting companies that want to dress their crews with
consistent uniforms that showcase the company logo and message. T-Shirts
are also a great option for youth or adult sports leagues that want to
outfit a team with a corporate or unique logo, family events — including a
family reunion or birthday party — or even a charity or every day event
that customers desire to promote.

Customers can pick from one of more than 300 professionally designed
templates or upload a company logo or multiple photos to a T-Shirt on the
VistaPrint Web site. Designs can be printed in the left chest area or full
front with the option to print on the back. T-Shirts are available in a
number of sizes, including S, M, L, XL, and XXL. They are a high quality,

New law requires PIs to be licensed When F.M. Chris Rey moved back to St. Louis after a career elsewhere in the military and federal government, he set out to get licensed as a private investigator — and was astounded to learn that licenses were not required in his home state. He quickly got involved with the Missouri Association of Private Investigators and has worked for years to get a state law passed requiring licensure. This year, the bill finally succeeded. The law is already on the books, but licensing is not expected to begin until early 2009.
Most of us have strange preconceptions of the role of the private investigator, but these were dispelled by an informative and humorous presentation by David Staves of Legal Services UK Investigations. David is a member of the Association of British Investigators and a member of the Certificated Bailiffs Association and has ensured a reputation for operating within a strict code of practice offering a reputation for total professionalism. This experience resulted in a very interesting video presentation and our members are now much more aware of the role of the private investigator and the part surveillance plays in that role.

SAN FRANCISCO — For all the power and complexity of modern computer networks, practical computer security against cybervandals may ultimately be found in the commonplace concept of a burglar alarm. Schneiers credentials include creating the Twofish encryption algorithm, which is a candidate to become the advanced encryption standard being set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. So it may seem odd that a scientist who designs unbreakable mathematical locks for protecting information is calling on e-commerce companies to put mere people back in the computer- security equation. But Schneier argues that to trust the safety of information stored in a computer system to even the most powerful computer security software alone is foolhardy. That is why his new company, Counterpane Internet Security, has adopted a business model remarkably like that of ADT Security Services, the burglar alarm company.

Tracing agents, process servers and enquiry agents all play a vital role within the credit industry. But are all these operators private detectives? The question is important - to them - because legislation requires all private detectives to be licensed by the security Industry Authority be early 2006. The problem is that there is no clear definition of private detective. At the moment, it is not at all clear who, exactly, will need to be licensed - but the Authority has said that licensing will be in operation by 2006 - even though they cannot, at this stage, define just who will need to be licensed.
A CITY council is planning to pay private detectives to go undercover and act as professional witnesses against suspected pimps and prostitutes. The controversial proposal by Birmingham City Council is a response to growing anger from residents over the number of prostitutes working in the West Midlands and the lack of prosecutions against pimps. Under the scheme, the council could pay up to pounds 3,000 a week to private detective agencies forcovert surveillance on a suspected brothel in local authority accommodation. Evidence of illegal activity would be used to evict the tenants and could be used in criminal prosecutions. The use of professional civilian witnesses has been used in Manchester to track down drug dealers and nuisance neighbours, but Birmingham is believed to be the first city to consider using it against vice. Part of the difficulty in obtaining a successful prosecution or eviction has been the lack of willing witnesses, because of fears of retribution.

QUESTION: Recently, administrators informed us that OR staff members must wear name tags, and they have provided us with lanyards to wear attached to the name tags. What is AORNs position on wearing a name tag in the OR? If a name tag is required, can we wear the lanyards around our necks, or are these considered in the same category as necklaces? Like a necklace, a name tag could be a potential source of contamination if the lanyard is dangling around the neck of perioperative personnel during prepping or when the person is near the sterile field. During this time, the name tag should be secured in a pocket or under a snapped warm-up jacket to prevent it from dangling or falling into the surgical area and leading to possible contamination. An alternative method of attaching the name tag (eg, a pin, a clip) may decrease the risk of the name tag contaminating the sterile field or a prepped area. The attaching device should be washable and securely attached to decrease the chance that it will fall off. Examples of devices that may not be acceptable include, but are not limited to,

Are you thinking about getting a pet? Then read on to see which one might be best for you. Pets can be great! Who else licks your face, chirps happily, or purrs in your lap? A pet can make you feel good and can calm you down when youre upset. And caring for a pet can help you learn about kindness and responsibility.
The book opens with an overview of pet therapy. The first chapter outlines the values of pet therapy programs using examples from previous pet therapy programs. The contribution that pet therapy can make to quality of life is addressed. According to editors Margaret N. Abdil and Denise Juppe, individuals who interact with pets begin to trust and use positive affection more freely. Pet therapy also promotes socialization, improves self-esteem and security, and provides entertainment and acceptance. Chapter 2, The Masonic Home of New Jersey, presents an in-depth case study that outlines a successful pet therapy program. It discusses the implementation process and emphasizes the continuous growth possibilities of this particular program. In addition, this chapter briefly discusses patients with Alzheimers disease and the positive effects from a pet therapy program.

THOUGH HE WAS ONCE tarred as a “Keating Five” Republican presidential hopeful John McCain is now running hard on a platform of cleaning up a campaign finance system We checked in with CEOs who keep a keen pulse on Washington to get their take on how to stem the stench-and the perception of stench-that often flows with large campaign donations. All agree that reform is badly needed, but each has his own, often unique, take on how to go about it-and whether it will ever really happen. A couple of our CEOs formed their views of the money pit from both sides of the hollow, having recently run for elected office themselves. -MERYL DAVIDS
CHARLIE Parker said, “Romance without finance is a nuisance.” And whether youre just married, just moving in, or just starting out, you know that making romance and finance work can be a frustrating and confusing experience. Navigating the mess is critical because financial problems can strain some relationships to the breaking point, says author Nick Chiles. The South Orange, N.J., resident has written a series of relationship books with his wife, Denene Millner, including What Brothers Think, What Sistahs Know About Sex: The Real Deal on Passion, Loving and Intimacy. “When we start thinking about spending the rest of our lives with someone, security becomes the prominent necessity. For both sexes, when we think about loving someone, we think about what our lives will be like with this person,” says Chiles, an award-winning journalist who has a psychology degree from Yale University. “So money pops up pretty immediately.”
Political Economy of Money and Finance Macmillan, London; and St. Martins Press, New York, 1999. This is an exceedingly important book. it is probably the most important contribution to the Marxian theory of money, credit and finance to appear in English since the translation of Suzanne de Brunhoffs Marx on Money in 1976. Itoh and Lapavitsas book includes a wealth of information, superb literature reviews, profound analyses of the historical evidence and substantiated discussions of controversial policy issues, whose digestion will keep even the most demanding readers busy for a long time. Their argument is invariably thorough, and their research ranges widely, and admirably, from the logical and historical origins of money to free banking, and from long wave theories to socialist money. In spite of its virtues, and partly because of them, this book will probably not become an icon of the literature, although it will certainly become a major reference in the field (which may well be a better option). The reason is simple: Itoh and Lapavitsas probe very deeply into Marxs theory of money and credit, marshal evidence widely, and engage in a wide variety of debates, not least with Marx himself (eg., they criticise certain aspects of Marxs theory of money, on pp.37-40, and credit, on pp.64-5). As their work is very ambitious, complex and controversial, it is unlikely to be universally acclaimed.

The study population consisted of Los Angeles County public school children in grades 5, 7, and 9, who underwent physical fitness testing during March 2001 through May 2001. Testing was performed by physical education teachers or other designated staff at each school. The California Department of Education offered training sessions for teachers and reimbursement for training materials and the costs of administering the tests. The instructions specified that measurements be recorded once for each child and did not include additional validation measures. The researchers classified students into body weight categories based on BMI growth charts and methods developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Overweight was defined as a BMI-for-age at or more than the 95th percentile. During the 2000 to 2001 school year, 397,898 students in grades 5, 7, and 9 were enrolled in 1686 Los Angeles County public schools. The final study group included 281,630 students, or 70.8% of all students enrolled in grades 5, 7, and 9. Children from families with an annual income at or less than 130% of the federal poverty level are eligible for free meals; children from families with an income of 130% to 185% of federal poverty level are eligible for reduced-price meals. These school-level variables were used, categorized into quartiles, to control for the effects of SES on overweight prevalence among demographic subgroups. The results found rates of overweight among Los Angeles County public school students that exceeded the rates reported nationally among children in similar age groups. These findings of a high prevalence of overweight among Latino and African American children were consistent with national prevalence studies. The present study is especially useful because the study population included a sufficient number of students to analyze prevalence among Asian, Pacific Islander, and American Indian children, for whom few data have been available. Overweight prevalence in each racial/ethnic group exceeded the Healthy People 2010 target prevalence of 5%. There was a higher prevalence of overweight among boys than girls, a pattern found among all racial/ethnic groups except African Americans, for whom the prevalence was higher among girls.

Politics and Trade The failure of EU countries to sign a European Union constitution will not directly affect the way we trade. The delay in agreeing the constitution was basically due to the demands of France and Germany for a “double majority” voting system. This may not seem serious. However, a number of traders at export meetings have expressed their concerns that France and Germany at closing ranks to create a power base, which may slow down economic growth across Europe. What a fantastic gathering of exporters! As well as lunch for nearly 300 exporters at the Copthorne Effingham Park Hotel, this annual gathering organised by the Southern Branch of the Institute of Export included an exhibition, seminars on trading in Hong Kong and South Africa. This year, for the first time, the meeting opened at 10.30am allowing visitors to spend plenty of time networking.
With the vast number of mergers, takeover bids, and sell-offs which have been announced over the last month, for the first time in living memory some companies which have never before considered selling overseas on a regular basis, are now seriously considering this option. It would seem that fear of losing a major domestic or overseas buyer, with the reduction of turnover and profits, has forced a number of companies to plan an export strategy to safeguard their survival. In its May issue, Export Times published its most comprehensive “UK-World Trade Review (Jan-Dec 1999)” which shows how the UK exports and imports to and from 191 countries in descending order of value. It also shows the ranking and the import/export ratio and the surplus/shortfall in trading terms for each country. In scanning this enormous list it is noticeable that Canada has jumped to twelfth place with our sales reaching L2556m, but there were also large reductions in UK exports to Italy, Sweden, Hong Kong, Norway, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and Turkey. However, sales to the USA, the UKs top individual export market, increased to L24,373m. Its reporter John Aczel says that sales of British goods in overseas markets have been fluctuating and were slightly easier in 1999. Some improvement is expected over the next 12 months, but much will depend on the level of sterling. The major improvement in 1999 was the recovery in Asia, where a growth of about 2.8 per cent was seen. Sluggish trading continued in Japan, but in other countries, including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea economic conditions improved.

4.1 The inflation outlook CPI-ATE inflation is projected at 21/a% in 2002, 2% in 2003 and 2 1/4% in 2004.1 CPI-ATE inflation may fall to 1 3/4% next summer. Thereafter, inflation is projected to edge up. At the end of 2004, inflation is projected at 22%. However, the annual rise in 2004 may be somewhat lower than this as a result of a lower rate of increase at the beginning of the year. CPI inflation is being temporarily restrained this year by lower excise duties and low energy prices in the first halfyear. CPI inflation is projected at 1 1/4% in 2002. Both oil prices and electricity prices showed a higher-than-expected rise through the summer. Measured in USD, oil prices are now around 35% higher than one year earlier. Our projections are based on the assumption of a gradual decline in oil prices, although the high level of oil prices is still expected to have an impact on consumer prices. The first-round effects will be to push up prices for petroleum products. This will be followed by indirect effects, such as higher transport prices, which will also exert some upward pressure on CPI-ATE inflation.
4.1 Inflation outlook Inflation measured by the CPI-ATE fell through 2003 and was very low up to August 2004. Inflation was lower than expected this summer, but in September the year-on-year rise moved up to 0.5%. This was approximately in line with the projection in Inflation Report 2/04, published in July. In the short term, consumer price inflation is expected to pick up relatively rapidly (see Chart 4.1). The depreciation of the krone through 2003 will continue to push up consumer prices. Adjusted for seasonal variations, monthly CPI-ATE inflation is projected to be somewhat higher in the period ahead than in the summer (see Chart 4.2). We also assume that the marked fall in prices for some goods and services last autumn will to some extent be reversed. Airfares, for example, have increased. Food prices, on the other hand, are likely to continue to rise at a slow pace.

CAREER planning is a lifelong process - from choosing an occupation and getting a job to growing in the job, possibly changing careers, and eventually retiring - and it is likely to happen several times as we first define and then redefine ourselves and our goals.
Dear Young Professional: We are pleased to extend a formal offer for your employment as an engineer.
1. Start planning early in your career. Ask yourself: do I want to specialise in a certain industry? Do I want to get some experience overseas? Do I want a top corporate position, or am I happy to remain a middle manager? 2. Be realistic about your ambitions, strengths and weaknesses. Being over-ambitious will only lead to disappointment. 4. Keep your skill sets up to date–get the relevant training you need in order to achieve your objectives and ambitions. This may mean changing jobs so that you get a wider range of experience and develop different skills.

Dont get me wrong. I like politics, I even like politics on television. At midnight I like nothing better than watching Andrew Neil chuckling over the events of the day with hollow-eyed MPs and hacks. Theres much to be enjoyed in Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday afternoons, even though at the moment we have a Leader of the Opposition who isnt especially good at asking questions and a Prime Minister who is especially good at not answering them. But I welcome the BBCs decision to remove live coverage of party political conferences from terrestrial television. For years, these annual tribal gatherings of the politically committed have turned viewers off politics, on to opposing parties, or on to another channel. During their long years in the wilderness, and for decades before that, the Labour Party had vibrant, argumentative debates in which a group of people, all espousing belief in the brotherhood of man, viciously attacked everyone and everything they did not happen to agree with. Year after year, stern trade unionists condemned even sterner party leaders; one wing of the party flapped at the other. Fear and loathing in Blackpool or Brighton.

Bob Livingston enjoys a down-to-earth reputation — hes not a man to stand on ceremony and friends acknowledge a certain Boy Scout element to his character. On the night of the House Republican Conference selecting him as speaker for the 106th Congress, that attitude was never more on show. Later, as the champagne corks popped under a ceiling of red, white and blue balloons, a Tokyo-bound President Clinton phoned to congratulate the incoming speaker. Hi, Mr. President, said Livingston. When told by Clinton that he was phoning from Air Force One, the Louisianan asked: Where are you going? Still later, standing in a Rayburn elevator surrounded by his new security detail and on his way to a formal congressional dinner, Livingston nonplussed his guards by asking cheerily: Have you guys got a car?

SAN RAMON — After six lengthy meetings of impassioned speeches, concerned tones and sometimes harsh words directed toward city officials, opponents of a change in the zoning of city golf courses shared a different form of expression. In a surprising move, the City Council recommended staff prepare a general plan amendment that would designate golf course land strictly for golf course use.

Acne MedicationAcne is a skin condition in which pimples (comedones) appear on the skin, usually on the face, chest, or back. Adolescents and young adults are most often afflicted. Acne tends to be more severe in males; however, with females, acne may persist into adulthood. The skin has hair follicles that each contains a hair shaft and an oil gland. The oil glands continuously produce and secrete oil to lubricate and protect the skin. However, when dead skin cells and oil (sebum) build up inside the follicle and close off the follicles pore, pimples appear, in the form of either blackheads or whiteheads. If the plugging material protrudes from the opening at the surface of the skin, this plug of oil and dead cells darkens, forming blackheads; if the plugging material does not protrude, whiteheads form. This type of acne is referred to as comedonal. When the accumulated material of a closed-off pimple causes the follicular wall to rupture, an internal inflammatory reaction occurs, causing oil, dead cells, and bacteria to spill onto the skin. The skin around the pore becomes red and inflamed, and the result is inflammatory acne. When white blood cells infiltrate the area to repair the inflammation, papules, nodules, and cysts may develop. Papules form near the surface of the skin, whereas nodules and cysts are caused by inflammation deeper in the skin.
What is acne? Acne happens when the inside of a hair follicle becomes sticky and forms a plug. Every strand of hair grows from a follicle under your skin. Oil glands in your skin keep making a greasy substance called sebum (say: see-bum). This sebum gets stuck behind the plug in the hair follicle. Bacteria get inside your hair follicle or oil gland and cause swelling, redness, and pus. Finally, a bump forms on your skin. Acne is most common on the face, neck, back, and arms. There are three kinds of acne: mild, moderate, and severe.

No shortage of storage in this kitchen remodel Chock-full of storage, this generous kitchen addition was annexed to the rear of the house. Among its space-expanding amenities are a 5 1/2-foot-long appliance garage, an eating and storage island, and a built-in desk for menu planning. Heart of the kitchen is a six-sided 9 1/2-foot-long island that provides storage for dishes, knives, and spices, as well as a cooktop and a snack counter serving four. For convenience, dishes are stored in the side of the island facing the sink and dishwasher. A U-shaped drawer for pots and pans pulls out under the cooktop.
As your familys needs change, so should your home. This Dallas kitchen had been remodeled three times prior to this update to accommodate changing needs. Each previous owner was careful to stay true to the homes original design, and it was equally important to current residents Kathy and Sam Leake that they respect that tradition as well. They worked to open up the room-improving both the amount of natural light and traffic flow. Plus, attractive design details give the space a cozier feel. The kitchen now connects to the dining room through two doors that permit traffic to flow freely from one area to the other. “The openness changed the home from a 1950s ideal, where the kitchen was hidden from public view, to a contemporary floor plan that showcases this room as the heart of family and entertaining activities,” says architect Stephen B. Chambers, who worked on the new design.

(This story was originally published in Lawyers Weekly USA, another Dolan Media publication). When parents with children divorce, their relationship is rarely over. The plan - which was distributed in September to 1,600 members - is intended to be a road map for navigating potentially bumpy child- rearing issues. It covers everything from where children will live and who theyll spend holidays with, to what after-school activities they can attend and what their summer schedules will be. The plan also asks parents to agree on their childrens religious upbringing and to confer with each other about non-emergency medical, dental and psychological treatments.
